EVENTS

Home Base Awesome Kids participate in a wide range of events which engage them in developmentally-appropriate enrichment activities to add to their learning at school, help them develop thinking and problem-solving skills, and spark their curiosity.

For example, before and during their March 2009 trip to Ghana, the Home Base Awesome Kids participated in a variety of related enriching events, including:

Book Project: The students wrote and illustrated a children's book called Magical Masks. Three hundred copies of Magical Masks were published and then read and given to African students at elementary, middle, and high schools and at orphanages throughout Ghana.

Drum Making Project: The drum is common to every culture in the world. At the Alaska Native Heritage Center, students made drums and learned an Alaska Native Dance. While in Africa, students performed the dance and gave the gift of their Alaska Native drums to students at a middle school in Ghana.

Special Wish List Project: Prior to their trip, students collected paper and pencils, toothbrush, toothpaste, hair products, and other travel size toiletries and hygiene products to donate to the children of Ghana.

Cultural Enrichment: While in Ghana, students visited museums, cultural centers, the Cape Cost Slave historical site, Mole National parks, the School of Performing Arts, the University of Ghana for a cultural exchange, and the Nzulezo Village Stilts.
